See below for insight into life through the eyes of a three-year old. I asked Danny the questions in English and his answers were a mix of English and Spanish. My translations and explanations are in parenthesis.
What is your favorite cereal? Blue. Aunt Jemima. Actually, it is Cheerios.
What is your favorite veggie? It is choclo (corn). I like veggies. I don’t like arvejas (peas).
What is your favorite drink? Milk. From America.
What is your favorite toy? Trains.
What is your favorite movie? The kid and the train. And there are so many kids. And the kid was on top of the train. And when the train stopped, there were so many elves there. And Santa was there too. (Polar Express)
What is your favorite game? Glue stick (no idea what this is about).
What is your favorite book? Three little kittens who lost their mittens.
What is your favorite dinner? Waffle-ohs (Eggo waffles). No, waffles-ohs are for breakfast. For real, it is pasta and pollo (chicken).
What is your favorite lunch? When it gets dark, let’s eat dinner. I want to eat lunch with you and Grandma, but she went shopping, so I guess I’ll eat with you.
What is your favorite breakfast? I already told you waffle-ohs.
What is your favorite holiday? This holiday. When we stay at Grandma’s house.
What is your favorite animal? It’s not the goat. I don’t like the goats because they bite me. I like the ranas (frogs) because they swim in the water.
What is your favorite stuffed animal? It is Poopy (the nannies have mispronounced “puppy” and the name “poopy” has stuck for this beloved golden retriever puppy).
What is your favorite color? Blue.
What is your favorite thing to do at school? Play with dragons.
What is your favorite sport? Blue. Or red. Blue is not a sport. What’s a sport?
What do you want for your birthday? Trucks and make a cake.
Where do you want to go on vacation this year? To Chicago, and let’s drive a motorcycle. To New York too.
What makes you happy? When I have toys.
What makes you sad? When I don’t have toys.
How old is Mommy? Forty nineteen (a little off)
How old is Daddy? Maybe 11. Or 40 (also not quite right).
How old is Patrick? 5
How old is Danny? 2. Actually Patrick and I are both 5. (Danny is 3 and Patrick is 5)
What is Mommy’s favorite thing to do? Play with toys with us.
What is Daddy’s favorite thing to do? Play with my toys or work. But work isn’t fun. Playing with toys is fun.
What is Daddy’s job? Play with toys and help people.
What is Mommy’s job? Do work and walk up stairs. I don’t know. (My office at the Embassy is upstairs, so he got that much right!)
What is Patrick’s favorite food? Waffle-ohs and Cheerios. I don’t know.
What is Daddy’s favorite food? Hamburgesa (hamburger).
What is Mommy’s favorite food? ensalda (salad).
What does our family like to do together? Eat and feed us. And play with so many toys.
What do you like to do with Mommy? I like to play with trains with you.
What do you like to do with Daddy? Play with him. Play Zingo.
What do you like to do with Patrick? I play with Patrick a lot. I play Zingo with him too.
Who are you going to marry? To you or Daddy.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want a bigote (mustache) and I want to be a fireman and a daddy.
What else do you want to talk about? Um, reindeer. And there should be snow on the ground here.
