Beach Time

During our trip to Rio, we visited Copacabana, one of the most famous beaches in the world.  It was beautiful and the boys were fascinated by the intricate sand castles adorning the beach.

Since our hotel was right on the water at Ipanema Beach, we spent more time there.

On our first visit to the beach, we walked along the water a bit.  Danny and Patrick loved it, but they were extremely concerned that every footprint in the sand might belong to Big Foot.  Patrick also claimed to have seen Big Foot swimming in the ocean, but I think he may have made that up.

At first the boys were very excited about looking for helicopters.  Danny quickly tired of this and instead decided to be a pirate.

We saw all sorts of vendors on the beach, selling bikinis, ice cream, headbands, necklaces, corn on the cob, sarongs, and we even saw a guy carrying two little kegs and selling glasses of beer.

We saw lots of people playing soccer and lots of scantily clad women.  Patrick, noticing the many girls in dental floss bikinis, asked Brian “Why are their butts hanging out of their bathing suits?”

The boys had a great time playing and digging in the sand, and especially loved burying their feet.

Patrick had a great time jumping and playing in the waves.  It was a little chilly and windy and the waves were a little strong (they almost took Patrick’s bathing suit!), but he absolutely loved every second of it.  Dan didn’t mind the waves, but he preferred playing in the sand.

When Patrick was shivering and his lips were blue, we told him it was time to get out of the water.  We got a few disapproving head shakes from an older Brazilian woman sitting near us on the beach.  Patrick didn’t mind the cold though – he was having the time of his life!  We wrapped the boys in a few towels to help them warm them up.

We visited the beach one at night after dinner for coconut drink.  Patrick had seen the coconuts on the beach and had wanted to try it.  When it came down to it, Patrick was a little apprehensive about trying it, though he eventually did take a sip.  Danny tried it right away and liked it.

We loved our time at the beach!
