An interview with Patrick on his fourth birthday

On Saturday, I conducted an interview with Patrick on his birthday.


See below for insight into life through the eyes of a four-year old. I asked Patrick the questions in English and his answers were a mix of English and Spanish. My translations and explanations are in parenthesis.

What is your favorite cereal? Bird cereal (Fruit Loops).
What is your favorite veggie? Manzana (apple).
What is your favorite drink? Jugo de manzana (apple juice)
What is your favorite toy? A race car that can drive on the bottom of the water and can come out of it.
What is your favorite movie? Dumbo.
What is your favorite game? Zingo (a matching game he loves).
What is your favorite book? The book with the mouse that knocks over the plate of cookies for Santa (“The Mouse Before Christmas”).
What is your favorite dinner? Pasta that is big and long and choclo (corn on the cob) and some pollo (chicken).
What is your favorite lunch? I just told you what I like to eat!  My favorite lunch is choclo too.
What is your favorite breakfast? Ola barns (granola bars).
What is your favorite holiday? Daddy’s office was spooky (Halloween at the Embassy).
What is your favorite animal? A lion that growls and opens his mouth so big and leaves it there.
What is your favorite stuffed animal? It is a bear who keeps his mouth like this (lips pursed) and doesn’t open it.
What is your favorite color? Amarillo (yellow).
What is your favorite thing to do at school? Play on the swings is my favorite thing at school.
What is your favorite sport? I don’t know which one is my favorite, but I like sports.
What do you want for your birthday? Balloons. Just balloons.  I want presents from Santa too.  Like a helicopter that can swim in the water.
Where do you want to go on vacation this year? To see the animals at the zoo, the zoo that has so many lions.
What makes you happy? Actually, I want to go downstairs.  I like playing with toys and creeping so quietly downstairs.  And I am getting tired of you asking me stuff.
What makes you sad? When Danny bites me.
How old is Mommy? 4.
How old is Daddy? 4.
How old is Patrick? 4.
How old is Danny? 1.
What is Mommy’s favorite thing to do? Playing with toys.
What is Daddy’s favorite thing to do? Playing with toys and riding a caballo (horse).
What is Daddy’s job? I don’t even know.  Pretending to be a gallina? (hen)
What is Mommy’s job? I don’t know. Your job is jumping on the couch and jumping over tables.
What is Danny’s favorite food? Pasta.  He just eats it crazy and shoves it in his mouth and rubs it in his face.
What is Daddy’s favorite food? It is pasta but he just eats it with a fork.  He screws it on his fork and then puts it in his mouth.
What is Mommy’s favorite food? Pasta.  You eat it like Daddy.
What does our family like to do together? Eat pasta and play with toys and airplanes and stuff like that.
What do you like to do with Mommy? Play with toys, like Zingo and Lincoln Logs.
What do you like to do with Daddy? He likes to play with Zingo and he likes to play outside with me.
What do you like to do with Danny? Play with toys.  Me and Danny like to play together.  Danny plays with a toy that makes sounds and creeps and then I find another toy that walks and creeps.  (No idea what this is about).
Who are you going to marry? Mommy can I marry you when I get big?  Can I marry Maria? (one of our nannies)
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be king, Batman the King.  When mean people try to hit you, I will come fly and save you and hold you so tight so you don’t fall into the sky because we will be up so high.
What else do you want to talk about? I want to talk about school. Just school. I like to say blah blah blah. When my birthday is over daddy is going on a trip. Muy incontento yo estoy. (“I am very unhappy”). That’s a song I sing at school. Why isn’t Scout here?
